Electrolytes and fasting: do they break a fast?
Zero-calorie electrolytes carry no energy, so the honest answer comes down to what else is in the sachet.
Short answer. No, plain electrolytes do not break a fast. Sodium, potassium and magnesium are minerals, not fuel, so they carry no calories and no carbohydrate. What breaks a fast is sugar, maltodextrin or any other carbohydrate mixed into the drink, so the ingredient list matters more than the word electrolyte.
If you fast, you have probably asked the question: can I have electrolytes, or do they break my fast? It is a fair worry, because a lot of drinks that call themselves electrolyte drinks are loaded with sugar. This is a plain look at what a fast actually is, why fasting makes your body lose salt, and where a zero-calorie electrolyte drink fits.
What actually breaks a fast
A fast is a stretch of time when you take in no energy. Energy means calories, and in food and drink calories come from three things: carbohydrate, protein and fat. When people talk about breaking a fast, they mean giving the body one of those and switching it back into fed mode.
Electrolytes are not any of those three. Sodium, potassium and magnesium are minerals, not fuel. Your body uses them to move water around, fire nerves and contract muscles, but they carry no calories and no carbohydrate. On their own, they do not provide energy for the body to burn.
The catch is what gets mixed in with them
Most mainstream electrolyte and sports drinks are built around sugar. A single bottle can carry the equivalent of several teaspoons. That sugar is carbohydrate, it carries calories, and it gives the body energy. For someone fasting, that is the part that matters.
The sneakier one is maltodextrin. If you have not come across it, maltodextrin is a cheap white carbohydrate powder made from starch. Brands use it as a filler and to add body and bulk to a mix. It has almost no flavour, so it is easy to miss, but it is still a carbohydrate that carries calories. A powder can be labelled sugar-free and still lean on maltodextrin for bulk.
This is why you cannot judge a drink by the word electrolyte on the front. Two tubs can both say electrolytes and one is basically flavoured sugar while the other is just minerals. The only way to know is to read the ingredients and the nutrition panel.
Why your body sheds salt when you fast
Here is the part a lot of people do not realise. When you stop eating, and especially when you cut carbohydrates, your body starts letting go of more sodium than usual. As the hormone insulin drops during a fast, the kidneys hold onto less salt and pass more of it out in your urine. Water tends to follow that salt out.
That is ordinary physiology, and it is worth understanding because sodium is the mineral that helps your body hold on to fluid in the first place. Plain water gets used up fast and a lot of it passes straight through. It is the sodium riding along with it that tells the body to keep the fluid.
